Welcome to Joe French, our new President
25 August 2018
I took it as a great honour to be invited to become President of Basingstoke Ladies' Choir. Music is an important part of my life, whether it is reminding me of significant events in my life or pleasant company when driving or reading the newspapers.
I served almost forty years if the Royal Air Force initially as a helicopter pilot and then on the staff with many years in the Ministry of Defence in London. Since leaving the Royal Air Force in 2007 I have served on the Board of several large corporations. Also, I spent eight years with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission first as a Commissioner and the final three years as Vice Chairman.
I have attended several Choir concerts down the years and my first trip on the road was the recent visit to Cornwall. I was most impressed by both performances over that week end. On Saturday evening several of the Treverva Male Voice Choir said that the BLC was the best ladies choir they had heard. This was during the concert and also in the club house later. Also, on the Sunday the praise in Penzance was equally glowing. 'Aren't they good' I heard several times during the rehearsal and in the concert itself after Sanctus the word 'beautiful' came out loudly from someone sitting behind me.
It was so apparent that choristers were rightly pleased with their performances. Success breeds success and the trip to Cornwall was an important milestone in the development of BLC. I know Rob Elliot won’t let the Choir rest on its laurels and I am sure you will all rise to that challenge and I look forward to future performances with great interest. Good luck.
